How do people pay in China?
China is nearly cashless. The two dominant payment platforms are WeChat Pay and Alipay. They are used for everything — street food, metro tickets, shopping, and even temple donations.
Can foreigners use WeChat Pay or Alipay?
Yes. Both platforms now allow foreigners to link international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) to their accounts. We strongly recommend setting this up before you travel. Download the app, complete identity verification (passport required), and add your card.
Should I bring cash?
Bring a small amount for emergencies (you can exchange at the airport or your home bank). In the cities we cover, you'll likely never need it, but it's good to have as backup.
Can I use my credit card in China?
International credit cards are accepted at large hotels and high-end restaurants, but not at small shops, local eateries, or for street food. WeChat Pay / Alipay is essential for daily life.
How do exchange rates work?
Your bank or payment platform will apply their exchange rate at the time of transaction. LVYV prices are in USD, and payments through Stripe / OceanPay will show your local currency equivalent at checkout.
